Bonjour, Everyone!

I’m Felicia Shelton, world traveler. I’ve lived as an expat in several countries and want more Americans, especially minority Americans, to do the same. But I know the idea of traveling and living abroad can be daunting, so I’m here to help. I have first-hand knowledge not only with the mechanics of going abroad but also with how crucial cultural understanding is for a positive experience. More than just securing a visa and booking a flight, successful expat living requires researching, reflecting on, and respecting the nuances of your new home’s values, etiquette, history and more.

Throughout my years teaching English abroad, working in interior design in France, and now running expat tours, I’ve seen too many people treat moving abroad like an extended vacation, without putting in the work to truly appreciate their new culture.

Yes, moving abroad can provide financial benefits, but that should not be the only motivation.

My mission with this blog is:

Bring awareness to the cultural research and understanding required before committing to expatriate life. Provide immersive resources for how to immerse yourself in a country’s traditions, values, and history. Share ways to thoughtfully experience local perspectives beyond superficial tourism. Advise how to avoid inadvertent cultural missteps or disrespect when relocating. Offer first-hand local etiquette tips spanning social, professional and daily life. Whether you’re still picking your destination or already planning an overseas move, I want to inspire and equip you to become a culturally competent global citizen. Let’s grow together on this journey to becoming mindful expats.
